With a career spanning 52 years, Roberto Carlos is the number-one artist in Brazil as well as in Latin America. A singer and songwriter with over 500 songs to his credit, a youth idol, and the greatest representative of a cultural movement called Jovem Guarda in the 1960s, he found his identity in romantic songs and consolidated his success in the 1970s. Without clinging to fads, he forged his own path, leaving a trail of songs that speak of love, solidarity, and trust in tomorrow. Nature was also a major theme, and in 1976, long before ecology entered the agenda of all nations and continents, he composed “O Progresso,” an anthem to nature conservation. This was followed by other alerts in the form of song, with topics such as predatory hunting (“As baleias”), exploitation of natural resources (“Amazônia”) and pollution (“No ano passado”). But his true inspiration is love. From the innocence and youth demonstrated in the songs of the 1960s, passing through troubled relationships, the awakening of sensuality in the 1970s, to intense love affairs, overwhelming and not always happy, written and sung in the 1980s, and finally the discovery of true love, mature love, balanced and yet full of passion, present in his songs from1990s onwards.
